Thumb on ice

0–3s

“Swiped for an hour. Matched with nobody.”

Subject: Woman, 33, Pakistani-American, light brown skin, long dark hair in a tortoiseshell claw clip, oversized lavender hoodie, small gold huggie earrings, chipped pale-pink nail polish.
Setting: Living-room sofa at night, cosy knit blanket, TV glow flickering blue from off-frame, a single floor lamp.
Vertical 9:16 extreme close-up, handheld. The thumb of a 33-year-old Pakistani-American woman with light brown skin and chipped pale-pink nail polish swipes left on a phone again and again, fast and mechanical. Cut wider: she sits on a sofa at night under a knit blanket, long dark hair in a tortoiseshell claw clip, oversized lavender hoodie, gold huggie earrings, and presses a small bag of frozen peas onto her thumb, deadpan, saying: "Swiped for an hour. Matched with nobody." Blue TV glow from off-frame plus a warm floor lamp, realistic hand motion, natural skin texture, shot on iPhone, vertical 9:16.
[Creator: Burned-out swiper, early 30s, natural and conversational]: "Swiped for an hour. Matched with nobody."

Loop resolves; peas land with a soft thud

Why it works

Swipe fatigue is the most common complaint about dating apps, and the frozen peas turn it into a visual joke that stops the scroll. The fix is a hard constraint (three a day) plus a reason, which is easy to understand and easy to believe.

Hook variants to A/B test

  • “I've swiped more than I've walked this year.”
  • “Endless profiles. Zero conversations. Sound familiar?”
  • “What if the app just sent you three people?”

Reference images

  • creator

Character reference on every beat; also a close hand reference with the chipped pink polish.

  • setting

    Scene reference across beats.

  • screen

Image reference for the phone; composite real screens in edit and only use staged or consented chats.

  • endcard

Production tips

  • The peas must be on the thumb by 1.5 s; trim the ECU if needed.
  • Swap the 'why you two' example for your app's real matching signal.
  • Test the CTA line on its own as a text-only hook.
